日本《共同社》25日獨家消息指出，考慮中國軍機在釣魚台周圍活動愈來愈頻繁，日本防衛省調整自衛隊戰機緊急升空數目，從以往的2架應對1架，增加至以4架應對1架。分析人士指出，這次調整是日本自衛隊自1958年以來史無前例之舉，緊張局勢隨著日本的強化態勢一觸即發。

從日本防衛省公開資料顯示，2016年日方對中俄等飛機總體緊急升空次數超過千次，創下歷史新高，其中超過七成是針對中國。據了解，空中自衛隊為了不讓解放軍進入北緯25度和26度之間的釣魚台上空，甚至將北緯27度設定為「防衛線」，但近期超過此線的中國飛機出現激增狀況，日方便決定強化戰機出動數目。

報導指出，屆時航空自衛隊升空的4架F-15戰鬥機中，增加的2架將在後方監視中國戰機行動，警惕後方是否有追加飛機。此外，大幅延長戰鬥空中巡邏的空中逗留時間外，還會出動E-2C預警機及空中女性手錶警戒管制機（AWACS），第一時間向F-15提供中方飛機的情報。

儘管防衛省2016年1月在那霸基地新編「第9航空團」，增加到約40架F-15戰鬥機，但即使如此待機戰鬥機數量仍然不足，對此日本航空總隊司令部將對全國基地的戰機實施一體化運用，以便更靈活應對。

事實上為了增強東海領空勢力，日本空自一方面引進F-35戰鬥機，一方面在去年8月計畫重大改進F-15J，讓該款戰機攜帶的空空飛彈數量一舉達到16枚，同時為F-15J與F-35、F-22更好的聯合作戰奠定技術基礎。據悉，日方相關單位已提出申請相關經費啟動升級計畫。

這一改進概念是源自於F-15的研製廠商美國波音公司，將讓F-15J配備2個全新的複合掛架，每個可以攜帶日本自行研製的AAM-4、AAM-5空空飛彈。加上已有的機腹4個掛架、機翼外側2個雙發複合掛架，一共可以攜帶16枚空空飛彈。改進後的F-15J戰機將以中矩攔射作為主要作戰手段，避免近戰。目前來看還沒有別款戰鬥機可以達到如此的帶彈量。
